This site started just as a location for me to show off photographs of interesting looking churches. I'd been noticing nice looking churches as I travelled around the country. Then I started photographing them on the outside. Later on I moved inside and started to obtain books all about churches. I started building a master index of churches in those books and this became a 'churches not yet visited' list. This list expanded greatly when I obtained set of data from Ordnance Survey via their Open Data platform. Suddenly I had locations of 22,000+ Places of Worship.
At this point I decided that this project was far too big for me to do alone. A revamp of the site was called for and the introduction of user input into the site. Please see the How you can help page to see how you can help.
With the help of many people it is hoped that this becomes the directory of historic churches in Great Britain. A reference for church historians and for anyone with an interest in their local church. I hope you enjoy looking around the site and will take the time to contribute to the site for the benefit of all users.
