You sometimes use the phrase Places of Worship rather than Church why is this?
This site has no religious bias at all. Interesting Mosques and Synagogues are included on this site as well as Churches, so the correct term is Places of Worship. The word church is used mainly for the Search Engines. I wanted to ensure that if a person searched google for Church that they might be redirected to this site.
Why don't you allow Family History information/requests on this site?
The purpose of this site is the discussion of Churches and Places of Worship and their history and architecture. I really don't want it swamped with messages from people looking for their great Aunt three times removed etc. So the decision was made early on not to allow any family history messages on the site.
Why did you select the counties you did?
This was a huge issue early on, something I could write masses on. I needed to split the country into areas to make it easier for people to search for Places of Worship in their local area. I also needed to have area that are a) well defined b) understandable to the majority of people. Counties was the obvious choice. However many boundary changes over the years has blurred this. So I tried to get a good data set of counties that people would relate to, this is generally pre-1974 county boundaries. So sorry Avon and Humberside, you weren't included
Why do some of the place names have an asterisk next to them?
These are only approximate place names taken from Ordnance Survey Open Data. This data contained the location of place names on their Landrangers maps. This was compared to their Places of Worship Open data and the nearest place name to each Place of Worship was selected, in most cases this is the correct town/village for that church, however there might be some cases where this is not correct.
